MDU, Otter Tail Ratepayers Get Electric Cost Alert
Associated Press
7/30/2010
North Dakota customers of Otter Tail Power and Montana-Dakota Utilities will be getting an explanation soon about a rise in their monthly electric bills.

The utilities want their customers to pay back development costs for the defunct Big Stone II electric power plant in northeastern South Dakota. Customers will be repaid over three years. An average Otter Tail residential electric customer will pay $1.51 more per month. MDU customers will pay an extra 62 cents.

Starting in August, the two utilities are including a notice in their bills about the increase. Both mention the uncertainty of federal energy regulation as a reason why Big Stone was canceled.

Public Service Commissioner Tony Clark says he saw no problem with the notices. Commission Chairman Kevin Cramer says he just wants them to be understandable.
