The city of Minot`s 2011 preliminary budget is complete and ready for aldermen to review for the next month. The proposed budget for 2011 is about $69.7 million. The budget increased more than two and a half percent from last year`s version. Average property values jumped more than 12 percent over the last year, meaning that if your home`s value stayed the same, you will actually pay less property tax to the city this year.
"But if your home has jumped from $100,000 to $130,000, the amount you pay in property taxes will go up because the value of your house has gone up even though the mills the city collects from you has gone down, "says Cindy Hemphill, City Finance Director.
Money to increase personnel for the police and fire departments as well as other city offices because of Minot`s growth is included in the proposed budget. The city council will make recommendations for changes and hold public hearings for budget input in September before voting to pass the budget. |
