Senators Try to Keep ICBMs

| 3/28/2012

With hearings about the future of the United State`s strategic forces going on, North Dakota`s Senators contacted leaders and urged them to maintain a fleet of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, several of which are located in the state. In a letter sent to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Senators John Hoeven and Kent Conrad, along with six others, wrote about the importance of a nuclear arsenal.

"Around the world, America`s adversaries are developing and refining nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. In order to have a truly effective deterrent, we must maintain sufficient strategic forces to guard against these threats simultaneously," the Senators said in a joint statement.

Currently, the U.S. has 450 Minuteman III missiles, 150 of them are at the Minot Air Force Base. The letter also asks that any reductions in missiles be made equally among the three locations.
