Roosevelt Zoo Easter Egg Hunt | Video

Jenny Castro | 4/7/2012

Some kids got a head start on their Easter egg hunting today. The Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot held their Annual Easter Egg Hunt and even though the zoo grounds are still undergoing flood repair, the hunt still went on.

Rain, shine or wind, the Roosevelt Park Zoo promised an Easter egg hunt Saturday. This year`s egg hunt moved to the MAYSA Arena. As anxious kids sprinted for eggs it was an indicator to the zoo staff that the community hasn`t forgotten about the zoo.

“That`s a great reminder when your doors are closed, to know that people have interest," said Zoo Director, David Merritt.

"We really enjoy these times to interact with people since we are missing that right now, with not being open," said Jennifer Fry, Zoo Education Coordinator.

There certainly wasn`t a lack a excitement. The temporary location served just fine for the eager hunters.

In the past, the hunt was usually held at the zoo. Employees say they`re coming back and you shouldn`t count the zoo out.

"The employees of the zoo and the whole park system are really very mission oriented people and it hurts our feelings that we can`t be performing our mission,” said Merritt.

“Having our animals so far away and also not being able to share the wonderful experience that we had at the zoo with our community," said Fry.

While zoo staff are working to clean up and restore the homes so the animals can return, a day like Saturday is a nice distraction.

The Roosevelt Park Zoo does not have an opening date as of now. But they are still holding the zoo camp this summer at Minot State University.
