The Souris River is typically a quiet place, that is, until something out of the ordinary happens.
"We had a call to our dispatch shortly after noon yesterday that a passer by had spotted what he believed was a body in the river," said Captain Dan Strandberg with the Minot Police Department
When emergency crews arrived on the scene...they found a male body floating along the river.
"When we first arrived, the body was east of the Broadway viaduct in the river and we recovered it directly under the Broadway viaduct," Strandberg said.
While the body was recovered, police are working to identify the man.
"There is some physical evidence at the scene that led us to believe that it is a certain individual, but we`re not positive of that," said Strandberg.
But, for people living near the river like, Judy Meyer, they`re surprised by the news.
"It kinda creeps me out. I didn`t know it was right here either. If I wasn`t leaving, you know, then I would have to be concerned for my own safety."
And, Meyer is not alone.
"Well it certainly is uncommon. It`s not something we commonly see," Strandberg said.
People living near the river say this is an eye opening experience. One that we can all look to as a teaching moment."
"I think it says a lot that we`re not as small and as wholesome as we used to be. I think there`s a lot more to be concerned for. A lot of people are coming into the area," Meyer said.
Police continue to investigate the situation in hopes of identifying the victim. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
