Quiet Rail in Bismarck | Video

Joel Porter | 12/11/2012

Downtown Bismarck may soon be a lot quieter. This week, the city commission voted to proceed with quiet rail in Bismarck. The plan would mute train whistles at 3rd street, 5th street and 12th street. City leaders say multiple trains pass through downtown every day blaring their horns, which is a nuisance to both residents and business owners.

"I think that this will just take our downtown to the next level," said Mayor John Warford.

"And I think the quiet rail will really help move that along and find us some housing places and also to continue for the businesses to grow," said commissioner Brenda Smith.

There`s no timetable for when quiet rail would begin. City leaders plan to begin negotiations with BNSF railway.
