Over The Counter Birth Control | Video

Julie Leonardi | 12/13/2012

More prescription drugs are now being sold over the counter and the FDA could add birth control to the list. The FDA says it`s willing to meet with companies that are interested in selling birth control without a prescription. But there are pros and cons to this issue which could mean risks for women who don`t see a doctor and then buy the wrong hormone drug over the counter.

Brad Morrison, Marketplace pharmacist said, “You might get the wrong type of birth control. It’s not the one size fits all. There are side effects with drug interactions if you`re just going picking it up off the shelf, most people aren`t going to think about that. Some people think if it`s over the counter it`s going to be safe and effective, well that`s not necessarily the case.”

This issue is still being discussed by the FDA and no final decision has been made.
