Talking About the Shooting | Video

| 12/14/2012

A devastating day for Connecticut and the country. Twenty-seven are dead after a gunman opened fire this morning in a Connecticut elementary school. Twenty of those killed were children. After the rain of gunfire, the shooter took his own life. The massacre appears to be the nation`s second-deadliest school shooting, topped only by the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

School counselors say it`s important to be honest with your children when they ask about the shooting, but you should be sure to keep it age appropriate and reassure them schools have safety measures in place to protect them.

"It`s really important to make sure your child isn`t sitting in front of the television for hours on end, or even at all really. This is gonna be covered on the news. It`s going to be all over and make sure you`re there with them limiting what they`re seeing and being there to answer questions if they have any," said Northridge counselor Bobbi Leier.

Bismarck Public Schools has tips online for parents to use when talking to children about school shootings.
