He is a finalist for top police jobs in three states, but Bismarck city leaders want Christopher Elg to lead the force here. On Tuesday evening, the commission voted to offer the police chief job to Elg, who works in West Monroe, Louisiana.

As KFYR-TV previously reported, Elg is a finalist for the same job in both South Bend, Indiana, and Bellingham, Washington.

The commission went into executive session during Tuesday`s meeting to discuss the new chief`s salary and benefit package. Elg has until midnight Thursday to either accept the offer or decline.

"I think that if Mr. Elg accepts this position, we`re very fortunate to have some individuals that will ensure the continued success of our police department as we move forward," city commissioner Parrell Grossman said.

Bismarck deputy police chief Dan Donlin still has a chance to become the new police chief. The commission also certified Donlin for consideration. Should Elg pass on the job, Donlin would be next in line.
