Congested Intersections | Video

Julie Leonardi | 12/27/2012

Minot`s growing population brings more drivers to the area and that can cause more congestion at intersections. There have been a total of 11 car accidents today alone, many near intersections on 16th street due to mall and highway traffic. But putting another traffic light too close to an existing one isn`t the answer.

Engineer Lance Meyers says there are many things to consider when adding a new traffic light, proper spacing between lights is one of them.

“Traffic volume is probably one of the most, the largest consideration, we also look at things like intersection safety, if the other roadway is coming in at a skewed angle, sometimes a traffic signal would make sense if there`s a lot of pedestrian movements, people walking around.”

Public Works plans on putting up a traffic light at the intersection of 16th Street and 31st Street Southwest to help with the flow of traffic in that area.
