Idling Unattended | Video

Sarahbeth Ackerman | 1/9/2013

It might be time to rethink that habit of leaving your car idling and unattended. Although there is no law in North Dakota saying you must be in your car while it`s running, law enforcement is asking people to take precaution when heating up your car this time of the year.

Officers suggest being close by your vehicle or at least in sight of your car. If you can`t keep an eye on your vehicle, Highway Patrol Captain Gary Orluck recommends having a spare key to lock the car while it`s warming up because a car unattended is an open invitation for crime. "Even though it`s not a law, good common sense would dictate that people should take a little extra precaution to make sure that they`re safe and that their car doesn`t walk away on its own."

In light of a recent abduction attempt, Orluck suggests always checking the back seat before getting into your vehicle.
