Tobacco Compliance Results| 1/10/2013
The compliance checks involve teenagers, who work under adult supervision, attempting to purchase cigarettes. The Department of Human Services says that out of 227 attempts in 2012, the teens were only successful 21 times, a violation rate of 9.3 percent.
The survey, which was conducted during the summer, did not involve law enforcement. The Department of Human Services says that states are required to conduct the survey to receive federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant funding. Stateís could lose funding if non-compliance rates are above 20 percent.
