Supporting the Nuclear Triad | Video

Rene Thibault | 2/7/2013

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven was in Washington yesterday, talking to a panel of Air Force Personnel and defense industry professionals about continued support for the country`s Nuclear Triad.

The Triad is made up of land-based and sea-launched ballistic missiles, and nuclear capable bombers, like the B-52s of the Minot Air Force Base`s 5th Bomb Wing. Hoeven told the group that a nuclear triad is the most effective strategy for preserving peace and stability throughout the world.

“Ironically the Triad`s biggest enemy today is its own success. Which makes it easy to take for granted, it’s human nature, right? It’s been so successful, we just take it for granted, cost effective and successful, exactly what we want.”

The Nuclear Triad accounts for just 2.8 percent of the entire Defense Department budget, but the White House is reviewing proposals that could reduce the Nation`s strategic nuclear weapons by several hundred warheads. How that might affect Minot Air Force Base is yet to be determined.
