Xcel Energy Billing Scam | Video

Amy Fox | 2/8/2013

Xcel Energy is warning its customers about a new billing scam going on around the entire state. The scammers call customers on the phone pretending to be Xcel Energy representatives. They will tell customers they have an outstanding balance and will lose service immediately if they don`t pay their bill. In many of the cases, the scammers persuade the customer to either get a pay card or provide a credit card number over the phone.

Customers need to be cautious when providing personal information over the phone.

"I think once people know that something is taking place, I think, it just heightens their alertness of the types of phone calls that they may receive,” said Minot Xcel Energy Community Relations Manager Kathy Aas

For more information about the scam, go to www.xcelenergy.com. To report an incident, call 1-800-895-4999.
