Bottineau Fatal Crash | Video

Sarahbeth Ackerman | 2/14/2013

A Minot man is dead after a crash last night on Highway 5, just 12 miles west of Bottineau. The highway patrol responded to an accident between a semi truck that was driving west bound and a car that was heading east bound.

The car lost control on the ice and slid into on-coming traffic. The truck driver tried to turn into the ditch to avoid the car, but ended up hitting the driver`s side of the car. Both vehicles ended up in the south ditch. The driver and passenger of the truck were not injured.

The highway patrol says the accident was so severe they were unable to tell if the driver of the car was wearing a seatbelt. The driver`s ID has not yet been released because the family of the victim lives outside the U.S.

"The family is being notified in Kenya. And, we actually had to have a co-worker and a friend send a telegram down there to reach the family. So, we expect the possibility of a few days before we can release his name," said Sgt. Michael McCloud.

Meanwhile, the highway patrol has released the name of a Minot woman who died after a crash yesterday on Highway 66 near Rolette. Irene Stromme, 75, was pronounced dead on the scene after traveling from the Belcourt area to her home in Minot.
