Prom Extravaganza | Video

Prom is a milestone celebration for high school students and getting ready to step out in formal wear is just half of the fun. Local students modeled some of the hottest prom trends at Mandan High School today, with the help of a supportive community.

Although prom may be months away, it`s never too early to find that perfect dress. Even if you don`t have a date, yet! But that`s the one part of it all for a girl: the dress, the hair, the make up- and looking like a star.

"It feels like we`re going to prom right now," said Brittany Swenson, as 29 students from Bismarck-Mandan, Beulah, and Underwood graced the runway wearing Milano dresses from Meriwether Trade and Gifts in Mandan.

"Around here, we really don`t have that many choices of stores to go to. So this is a great importunity to get cool dresses," said model Kayla Golke.

Owners Scott and Roma Newton spearheaded the First Annual Prom Extravaganza, a completely free event showcasing dresses, giving out prizes and offering prom deals from local businesses.

"We`re all doing this together. So it`s all of us showcasing our businesses here together. Working together as a community," explains Newton.

Sixty-five local businesses came together in less than five weeks to put on the event. About 200 people showed up to score some deals and cheer on the models.

"It`s really cool that our community comes together to make sure our night is special and we have the night of our lives for senior prom or whatever year. and it`s really cool that they`re into it," said model Courtney Goetz.

The dresses were sold at a 10 percent discount, and the Prom Committee says they look forward to hosting Prom Extravaganza in the future.
