Blood Shortage | Video

Julie Leonardi | 2/20/2013

The harsh winter weather isn`t only causing a big problem for drivers out on the road, it`s also causing a blood donation shortage. United Blood Services had six scheduled blood drives across the state on Monday, all of which were cancelled due to bad weather.

The blood drives usually bring in between 500 and 600 units, then the units are sent away to process for three days. The center is hoping everyone who can donate blood will come out to help with the shortage.

“Bottom line, blood’s only good for 42 days, we need 500 units. And Monday, just like that, we`re down 500, for the rest of the week,” said Center Manager Rich Larcombe.

The six blood drives that were cancelled will be rescheduled soon, and more drives will take place in the spring as well.
