Student Wins ACT Award

Posted: Updated:

The American College Test, better known as ACT, is honoring those who focus on life after high school through the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. Starting last year, the campaign challenged six states to nominate their best companies, students and schools for the national title.

More than 20 students were nominated to be the top student for North Dakota. The winner is nothing short of a hero.

Samuel Lim moved from South Korea, to Germany, to California and then to North Dakota. All the while learning three different languages, making new friends and keeping good grades.  Oh, and he's partially deaf. None of this seemed that hard to him.

"I think I got the hang of it. My parents were actually telling me sometimes that I worry too much about studying," says Lim.

"It's easy to highlight the people who always succeed. Sometime, you have look for these students who've really overcome some challenges. He certainly has," says Scott Montgomery, ACT.

Lim, along with countless others, was nominated to be North Dakota's top student for the ACT Campaign. Twenty students were given honorable mention. Sam, Hess Corporation, North Dakota State College of Science, and Carrington High School received the top honors.

The Department of Public Instruction officials say they appreciate the hard work of all schools and companies that promote college and career readiness.

"By the year 2018, over 80 percent of our jobs in North Dakota will require at least some post-secondary certificate. It's important that we continue these partnerships, continue this collaboration, and scale it up," says Kristen Baesler, DPI.

On top of the ACT award, Samuel has a full ride to Yale.

"Just because somebody else is doing well, you don't have to feel like you shouldn't do well or something. You have to try your best," says Lim.

All four North Dakota winners will go on to compete in the national campaign in June.

ACT officials say the campaign is steadily growing and they hope to have all 50 states competing one day.
